Year 7 & 8 students of Immanuel are uniquely placed between the typical primary school structure of having a class teacher who teaches across all areas of the curriculum, and the high school structure where students learn under specialist teachers. At Immanuel, our students have a homeroom teacher who is responsible for the core curriculum areas. They use the Interact Curriculum, written by Helen Pearson. However, they also have the exciting opportunity of learning from teachers who are experts in very specialised fields, such as Technology, Art, Maori and Music.
As we are a small school, our Intermediate students travel to a local Intermediate school to utilise their specialist Technology teachers in such subjects as Food Technology, Biotechnology, Soft Materials Technology etc.
A further highlight of the Intermediate programme is the camping opportunities provided each year. Every second year, we use the Marine Education & Research Centre (MERC) facilities in Long Bay and experience kayaking, abseiling, sailing, archery, orienteering and numerous other activities. On the alternate year, we tend to “go bush” with our students. This has always proved to be a challenging camp for our students, nevertheless it’s an experience they never forget.
One of the exciting features of the Intermediate area of our school is walking with the students as they grapple with real issues of faith. Developmentally, they are beginning to question what they believe in order to “own” their faith. It is a growth time for our students as they seek to walk the talk and talk the walk. What a privilege to join them in that journey!
