Children at Immanuel are excited about learning and are ready to learn. Each child is expected to work to the best of their ability. Small class sizes mean teachers can quickly recognise the unique learning styles of each student and shape lessons accordingly.
All of our studies are based on the Biblical perspective, and the Interact Curriculum, written by Helen Pearson, is used. This means our studies in devotions will be a basis for other work – whether it is art, written language, reading, social studies or science etc. In every area the children are challenged to measure what they are learning with what the Bible says.
The primary school lessons are structured so that the ‘intensive’ formal learning occurs in the morning, when children’s concentration is at its peak. A typical day’s timetable for the primary school would look like this:
• Devotions, Fitness, Maths - morning tea
• Reading, Writing, Grammar, Spelling - lunch
• Afternoon lessons may include: Art, Music, P.E./Health, Theme and Handwriting.
With the whole department on a similar timetable, we have the option of moving children between classes for special abilities/special needs students.
Children are given opportunities to learn performing arts skills through participation in musical theatre. They use these to bless one another and the wider community. Classes may present items at assemblies. Parents are invited to all school assemblies, and particularly enjoy seeing their children participate. During the year small groups may go out and perform for people in the community eg. at rest homes. Every second year, the whole school works together to present a musical.
The generous participation of parents, whether it be helping in the classroom, giving a special talk relating to a current topic, or providing transport and leadership for trips is invaluable.
